Hi! My name is Kym Goodsell, and I am a technical communicator. I like writing in a wide variety of formats, be it short social media posts, longer informational blog posts, or more technical reports. I also enjoy designing across different mediums, from web design to print posters and brochures. I’ve worked with programs like InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and WordPress, and I enjoy any opportunity to learn new things and expand my knowledge.
I’m about to graduate from Utah State University with a major in technical and professional writing and a minor in marketing. Throughout my time in college, I have had the opportunity to partner with several community organizations to design documents to meet their needs. One of my favorite projects involved redesigning a website for a local non-profit organization. In doing that project, I gained a passion for non-profit work and other work in the social justice field and for creating documents that will be used to help better real people’s lives. While working on this project, the importance of making information accessible to everyone became clear to me. That experience inspired in me a desire to produce accessible documents to ensure no user gets left behind.
I was also able to gain experience in writing for the web when I designed and wrote for my personal blog over the summer. Not only was it a fun opportunity to write about topics I enjoy, but I was also able to gain valuable marketing and other web skills. I self-taught myself about search engine optimization (SEO) and was able to grow my following to 60,000 views in just three months by utilizing SEO and social media marketing. The combination of my marketing minor, technical communication major, and practical hands-on experience prepares me for a variety of writing and designing projects, and I love that creating for the web allows me to combine my writing and marketing skills.
I would love to combine my passions for social justice and creating for the web into a career where I can use my skills to help make the world a better place. I am currently seeking social media marketing and web design and writing opportunities, especially in the non-profit sector or a related field.
